With significant help from many of you in Littleton Writers’ Critique Group, I spent a decade writing a number of novels and collecting a few Colorado Gold accolades along the way. Then, starting in early 2013, I got busy and rarely made a critique session, which is the bad-news part of a good-news story, as follows.
You might know that, after my retirement from Marathon Oil, I researched (based on my career expertise) the cause of the 2010 Macondo blowout—one of the most lethal, costly, manmade, environmental disasters in U.S. history. That research drove me to write (what I know) and self-publish in late 2012 my facts-based novel: “THE SIMPLE TRUTH: BP’s Macondo Blowout.” I self-published because a number of agents/publishers feared the liability of my written words during the (still-ongoing) multibillion-dollar litigious environment of the day. Nevertheless, the published book, in turn, led to my professional speaking platform on the same topic, wherein during the two years that followed, I made almost fifty technical presentations to U.S. and international audiences who care about the cause of the disaster. I don’t make my presentations with books in hand, but I can confirm that speaking engagements and book sales fuel each other.
In the latest development, I’ve been appointed a Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Distinguished Lecturer for 2015-2016. My topic will carry the title: “Assessing and Applying Petroleum Engineering Data from the 2010 Macondo Blowout.” As such, I will be funded to make presentations to SPE members in the U.S. and around the world at multiple locations to be agreed. Lots of planning, planes, people to meet, and perhaps even a few books to sign, through mid-2016.
And that’s why I’ll be away from the SW Critique Group—AKA Littleton Writers—for a while longer, missing all your smiling faces. So, write what you know . . . or make it up.
